The journey so far...
New Zealand born Joanne Slagel hails from the North of Auckland. Her style of music has been birthed out of a combination of many years playing the trumpet in jazz bands, many nights jamming on acoustic guitar and a love for a strong groove. With influences ranging from Benee to Eva Cassidy and Jamie McDell to Idina Menzel, Joanne’s music struggles to fit neatly into a single genre box, but can loosely be described as “alternative pop with folk and jazz influences.”
Joanne has been singing professionally for over ten years and has performed at numerous weddings, restaurants, bars and functions. She released an EP “Where’s the Time” under the name Joanne Chester in 2009. After an eleven year career as a music educator, Joanne has only recently decided to pursue music as a full time occupation.
Of further “note”, Joanne has written three musicals with her husband Marcus Slagel, all of which are Christmas themed. The first two have been performed at City Impact Church Auckland before an audience of 3000-4000 people in 2013 and 2015. The third premiered in both Queenstown and Invercargill in December 2018.
2019 saw Joanne perform at Music in Parks and finally get back in the studio working with Palmerston North based producer Tony Aspden. She spent January 2020 performing 13 shows around the North and South islands on a pre-release tour. Joanne released three singles in 2020: Moonlight, Unified New Zealand and Hold Me by the Fire and started off the new year with a 6 date tour in January 2021.
